Herniated-disc and disc-protrusion Five weeks ago I was examined by a neurosurgeon who diagnosed a herniated-disc in the area L5/S1 after looking at my computer tomography photographs. In addition protrusions in the area of the L3/4 and L4/L5 were diagnosed. The surgeon advised me to have an operation very soon. An orthopaedic surgeon who I also consulted, advised me against it. I have been treated so far with heat therapy, infusions, extension and finally physical therapy (mainly massages). Unfortunately the complaints have got worse.Initially I was relatively free of pain when sitting and lying but now I can hardly stand being in one position for longer than 2-3 minutes. In desperation I have also tried acupuncture, unfortunately without success. My question is now: Is an operation really unavoidable? As I live in Herford (Westfalen) treatment in Munich would be very inconvenient. Could you recommend a clinic (practice) in my area which also uses your methods of treatment?
