Herniated disc caused by an accident
Can a heavy blow (I fell in a hole) trigger off a herniated disc. If so, would I be able to then stand up or would I be unable to move?

Opinions are divided on this question !

herniated disc Answer: Herniated disc caused by an accident
Dear Mr / Mrs S.,

A heavy blow can definitely lead to a herniated disc, especially if the disc has been previously injured. Quite often however, a disc which is slightly herniated and then made worse by a heavy blow, can then cause pressure on the nerves. The resulting complaints could go as far as the patient being unable to move. This “lumbago type pain” is however often caused by tilting of the so-called small vertebral joints and are not always due to a slipped- disc.

Yours sincerely,

Dr. med. S. Böll
