 Scheuermann’s disease
I am 51 years old and have been suffering from back pain for several years. My doctor recently sent me to an magnetic resonance scan. The result was that the so-called “Schmorl’s nodes” were present in my spine in the L4 and L5. What are my chances of a complete recovery with the right therapy?

Scheuermann´s disease Answer: Scheuermann’s disease
Dear Mr K.,

The so-called Schmorl’s nodes are small indentations of the base and top plates of the vertebral body where the disc-tissue has forced it’s way in. This occurs at the age of 15 to 20 and is not always the cause of back problems. A further orthopaedic explanation of your complaints would possibly be necessary.

Yours sincerely,

Dr. med. S. Böll
